Plate - Chinese - Ming Dynasty
Solid, Chinese antique ceramic Swatow Ware plate, dating from the late Ming Dynasty. The Ming Dynasty ruled China from 1368 - 1644, a period of native Chinese rule between Mongol and Manchu dominance.
Swatow ware, or Zhangzhou ware, refers to the coarser, late Ming dynasty Chinese export ceramics, that often featured bold, vibrant designs. It was intended for Southeast Asian markets, for daily use.
This plate dates to c1590 and is 19.5cm in diameter.
The pattern is a stylized Dragon. In Chinese culture, Dragons symbolize power, strength, good luck, prosperity, and imperial authority. They're often associated with the control of water and weather, and are a revered figure in art, mythology, and celebrations.
